GALLERIES OF GRANITE EDGES
My day was made, however, by another article in the same Sun tiffed "Galleries of
Granite Edges." This article was a nit-picker's dream come true. It was about decorative stone dealers, those who sell slabbed and polished rocks for countertops, floors, and so on. It has to be said that the information for this article obviously came from one or more of these stone dealers, but one would hope that the writer had done a little research instead of just parroting everything the dealers said.
She did not, for example, appear to appreciate the fact that, for the dealers, the term
granite is a generic one and that much (most?) of what they are handling is not granite at all. Pieces that have beautiful wavy patterns in them are almost certainly gneiss. In fact, if you visit one of these showrooms, you will note that, in spite of a wide array of rock types represented, as far as the dealers are concerned they are all either
granite or marble edges. The beautiful green serpentine with veins of white calcite that at one time was so common as bar counters is, to them, marble.

For kitchen countertops it is advisable to use either white or grey marble, Carrara marble in particular. On the otherhand for a longer lasting countertop, from an aesthetic point of view, Granite is the choice.
